Through the whole operation he didn't spill one drop onto our carpet...until literally the last flick of the paint brush...doh! Percy wasn't a very happy man. Ah well, all in a good cause.

Climbing Grafitti
Our design guru (responsible for all Five Finger Thing & Climbing Works clothing) and all-round nice guy Craigy came in on Easter Sunday (his only free time as he's a very busy man) to re-paint / spray his SeeinColour column. As is his style, he went for something a little different and it turned out looking pretty damn cool.

Spring Snow
Don't you just love the U.K?? Spring is here and it snows??? Ah well, I don't mind as I love the snow (just a big kid really) and it makes for great conditions - Sam took full advantage of them and sent a couple of big ticks on the grit (more on that soon).
Anyway, as its Snowing in Sheffield - here's a great pic

Happy Easter : )

A Busy Weekend
What a weekend!! The Climbing Works has had some very busy weekends since we opened but this past one brought it to a whole new level.
Saturday:
It all started at 7.45am on Saturday morning when BUSA (British University Sports Asscociation) officials arrived to start the setup for the student bouldering championships. With 400 competitors split into 2 sessions (plus 100 officials) it was a full-on day with the students enjoying the new yellow circuit specially set for the competition.
Sheffield Uni took away all the main prizes placing 1st & 2nd in the mens (Ned Feehally & Dan Variant) with The Climbing Works staff member Lily Fitzgibbon taking 1st in the womens category - Graeme had threated her employment status if she hadn't won ; )
After clearing out the students we only had the small job of setting up for the Chris Sharma lecture which involved lifting the comp wall mats (not fun), cleaning, screen setup & putting out 300 seats all in the space of 2 hours but as we are so slick (well we are!) it was done with time to spare. Chris did a great lecture lasting around the 2 hour mark and with everyone out by 11pm it was now time to re-set the wall for Sunday morning. The cheeses finally left at 11.55pm ending a quite lovely 16hr workday!
Sunday:
Being closed on the Saturday & with the students still in town meant we had a crazy start to the day with the center rammed by noon. With the 2nd Sharma lecture to setup for we closed the comp wall section a little early and once again staff members & friends (thanks by the way) lent hands & arm muscle to go through the whole process of lifting mats (still not fun) & chair setting etc...
After closing the center for all of 8mins we reopened the doors at 8.05pm for the 300 eager public to come through. Slick & smooth work again by all the staff meant we had everyone in, fed & watered, and sat down for 8.30pm.
As for Saturday night, Chris gave a blinding lecture. A slight hiccup with the sound system at the start meant a short delay (we figured out it was because of Chris's aura - he was just too psyched to be in such an amazing venue & it affected the electronics).
One of the highlights of the weekend was the half time raffle compared by the one & only Niall Grimes (Chris was a bit star-struck but he managed to hold it together...well, it was NIALL GRIMES!!) meant alot of happy people walking away with some very nice prizes from Evolv & Prana.
Like the previous night, the crowd left happy and motivated to get cranking. Once again it was left to the staff & friends to reset the whole wall which took around 45mins (another impressive feat). So midnight rolled around once more and with that an absolutely crazy weekend came to a very happy ending.

Chris answering questions at the end. Nice big screen too.
What lecture? 11.30pm and all is back in place.
As for this Irishman, today is St Patricks Day and after that weekend Sam & I are heading for a well-earned pint of the black stuff.
Thanks to everyone who helped out especially Matt Heason (heason.net) - you're all stars!! We'll put up more photos etc.. in the next few days.

New Carpet, Sharma Lectures & BUSA Competition
This Saturday sees the BUSA (British University Sports Assocciation) Bouldering Championships being held at The Climbing Works for the 2nd year in a row. This means that the wall be CLOSED ALL DAY to members of the public. There's also no spectators allowed due to space restrictions so unfortunately you can't even come watch. We'll be back open on Sunday as usual.
This weekend sees Chris Sharma visit The Climbing Works for two very special lectures. Tickets are sold out for the Sunday night with only a few left for Saturday night. Tickets will not be available on the door so be very quick if you want to see him. Another reason to be here is the rather nice ale we'll be having on the night. Just delivered, 300 bottles of Kelham Easy Rider Ale....hmmmmmmmmm.
If you've come down this week you may have seen a bit of a difference in a large part of our flooring. We've now finished the first stage of our carpeting of the whole matting and it looks (and feels) awesome. Reasons behind it is because its easier to clean, nicer on the feet and its easier to take care off. The rest of the wall will be carpeted over the next few months. Below are some pics:

International Recognition for The Climbing Works
We've had quite a few mentions on international websites regarding the wall here and just how bloody good it is (well it is) but the latest 'big-up' comes from routesetter.com - a website, as the name suggests, dedicated to that blackest of black arts, problem setting. It's always nice to get good feedback so cheers!
While on the subject of other websites, you can read a small report about the Berghaus Bouldering League that ran during winter in The Climbing Works on the Climb Magazine website. Some very nice pics too.

Britain's Manliest Man Sets New Circuit
Yesterday we where honoured to have the presence of Britain's Manliest Man 2008™ visit The Climbing Works. While here he graced us with a superb new circuit (Red Font6c-7c) which should keep most of you busy for a fair while as it has numerous problems & moves best described as 'dirty'.

Percy & Pickles testing the new red circuit
If you're still thinking of coming to the Chris Sharma lecture, you better hurry as we're nearly sold out. Last few remaining tickets for Sunday, Saturday has more availability but not much.

Scarpa Circuit Winners
In the middle of January we did something very different and new - we created an Orange circuit (supported by Scarpa) that started easy and got progressively harder. The goal was to complete 40 out of 41 problems to be in for the chance to win a pair of Scarpa Climbing Shoes.
The Orange Scarpa circuit quickly became a favourite and with its popularity Scarpa generously upped the winnings from 1 to 13 pairs of shoes. With the final date just passed it's time to announce the lucky winners.
Drum role please......
1) Gus Hudgins
2) Graham Hoey
3) Jasper Sharpe
4) Nigel Smart
5) Gavin Harness
6) Stephen Glennie
7) Chris Lamare
8) Matt Hawley
9) Simon Wadsworth
10) Andreas Jenni
11) Rick Webber
12) Scott McLellan
13) Mark Glennie
The winners can claim their free shoes from The Climbing Works from this day forward. All you need to do is come into the shop and find the right pair for you.
There will be another circuit later on in the year so keep an eye out on the blog and in the wall for details.

Berghaus Bouldering Competition - R4 & Final Results
Sorry for the delay in getting these scores up from the final round of the Berghaus Bouldering league but its been busy in these walls and there was alot of scores to add up.
This year saw a huge amount of entries across all categories and within every round. From the feedback we got, everyone seemed to enjoy the setup and the problems. We'll be doing it all again next Winter but for those who love their comps, we're doing a very special one in April. There'll be more on the website and this blog within the next few days so check back for all the dirty details.
Overall winners in the senior categories where Dave Barrans & Leah Crane. Dave won all 4 rounds but still only won the overall competition by only 18 points (equal to 2 flashed problems) while Leah won 3 out of the 4 rounds. Below is the top 5 scores in the main categories but you can see the FULL overall and Round 4 results on The Climbing Works website here>>
For this round The Climbing Works also teamed up with Sheffield SIFE, to help the event run even more smoothly. A proportion of the revenue raised went back into SIFE and will be used to help various local projects such as St Lukes Hospice for the blind and also helping to teach economic skills to underprivileged youngsters in the local community.
